Three dimension systems, three different questions
Rough dimensions describe lumber before final surfacing. Nominal dimensions are trade names or size categories. Actual dimensions are measurements of the physical piece in its current condition. Confusion happens when a number from one system is used to answer a question from another.
When checking a hardwood purchase, use the dimensions and tally convention stated by the supplier. When testing whether a part can be cut from a board, use the board's current measured size and allow for milling. When describing a finished component, use its final actual dimensions.
Rough hardwood
Hardwood thickness is commonly described in quarter-inch units such as 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 8/4. Four-quarter stock is nominally one inch thick before surfacing; eight-quarter stock is nominally two inches. A rough board may vary across its face and may measure slightly more or less at individual points. The category communicates the starting thickness class, not a guarantee of finished yield.
Dealers often tally rough hardwood using the nominal quarter thickness and measured rough width and length. Surfaced stock may still be priced from its pre-surfacing category. Ask the yard how S2S or S3S material is measured, especially when comparing prices from suppliers that offer different milling services.
Nominal construction lumber
A nominal 2×4 is a product name, not the final cross section. A common dry surfaced 2×4 measures about 1.5 by 3.5 inches, but moisture condition, product standard, treatment, and regional supply can affect the actual measurement. Construction lumber is generally priced per piece, so a board-foot conversion is mainly useful for comparing volume, weight estimates, or material alternatives.
Plans often call out nominal sizes because those names match common products. Joinery and finished assemblies, however, depend on actual size. Measure the stock before cutting dadoes, setting fences, or calculating a precise opening.
Surfacing changes thickness and width
Flattening removes high spots from one face, then thickness planing makes the opposite face parallel. Jointing and ripping straighten the edges. A bowed, cupped, twisted, or heavily rough board loses more material than a flat one. This is why 4/4 stock does not guarantee a full 1-inch finished board and may not always yield 3/4 inch across a wide part.
The required part length also affects yield. End checks and planer snipe may need trimming. A long board with mild bow can require more thickness loss than the same board cut into short blanks before flattening. Whether it is safe and appropriate to rough-cut first depends on the project and available equipment.
Which number belongs in the board-foot calculator?
For a supplier cost estimate, enter the thickness, width, and length the supplier uses for billing. For an inventory record, decide whether the goal is purchased volume or current physical volume and label it consistently. For finished project volume, enter the final measured dimensions. The calculator cannot infer which convention you intend and deliberately does not replace a nominal number with an actual one.
Example: an 8-foot nominal 2×4 is 5.333 board feet using 2 by 4 inches and 3.5 board feet using 1.5 by 3.5 inches. If it is sold for a fixed piece price, neither calculation changes the price. The difference simply answers two different volume questions.
S2S, S3S, and S4S
S2S generally means surfaced on two faces. S3S normally adds one straight edge, and S4S means both faces and both edges are surfaced. The exact service and resulting tolerances can vary by seller. A surfaced board saves milling time but offers less opportunity to choose how defects and grain are removed.
When ordering surfaced material, confirm target thickness, whether width is fixed or random, and whether the invoice tally is based on rough or delivered size. Compare total usable yield and labor rather than price per board foot alone.
Sheet goods and engineered panels
Plywood, MDF, particleboard, and other panels are normally sold by sheet, not by board foot. Their labeled thickness may differ from a measured thickness, which matters for grooves, dados, drawer parts, and captured panels. Use calipers on the actual sheet and size joinery accordingly.
A board-foot conversion can describe panel volume, but it is rarely the clearest way to order or budget sheet goods. Count full sheets based on a cutting diagram and include kerf, grain direction, damaged edges, and handling allowance.
Moisture and acclimation
Wood dimensions change with moisture, primarily across the grain. Rough lumber that has not reached the shop's target moisture may change after purchase. Acclimation does not mean leaving boards in a tight stack; airflow, species, thickness, initial moisture, and shop conditions determine how quickly the material equalizes.
Measure critical stock again after acclimation and milling. For solid-wood panels and inset doors, plan movement in the finished construction instead of assuming the dimension measured on one day will remain constant year-round.
Buying checklist
- Ask whether price is based on rough, nominal, or delivered dimensions.
- Confirm grade, moisture condition, surfacing, and minimum quantity.
- Measure actual thickness and width before precise joinery.
- Allow enough starting thickness for flattening and cleanup.
- Label estimates so rough purchase volume is not confused with finished part volume.
