How to size a drawer box
Measure the space the box will occupy
Start with the clear inside width and usable depth of the cabinet, not automatically the visible face-frame opening. In a face-frame cabinet, the opening can be narrower than the space behind it, and mounting brackets or blocking may establish a different slide-to-slide dimension. Measure at the front and back of the slide location and use the dimension that matches the hardware installation method.
Check the opening for square by comparing diagonals or by measuring width at several heights. A drawer box sized perfectly for the widest point can bind at a narrower point. Also confirm that hinges, doors, pullouts, plumbing, and shelf pins do not intrude into the drawer path.
Let the slide specification control clearance
Subtract the slide manufacturer's total side clearance from the clear opening to get the drawer's finished outside width. Side-mount ball-bearing slides commonly require a nominal 1/2 inch per side, but actual requirements vary. Undermount slides often specify a precise relationship among inside drawer width, material thickness, notch size, and locking-device position rather than a simple universal deduction.
The presets are planning examples, not hardware standards. Read the installation sheet for the exact model and revision you own. If a manufacturer specifies a tolerance range, target the center of that range unless the instructions say otherwise. A difference of 1/16 inch can matter more to slide performance than a visually perfect cabinet reveal.
Understand the butt-joint cut list
This calculator assumes two full-length sides with the front and back fitted between them. The front and back cut length is therefore the outside drawer width minus two material thicknesses. If your front and back overlap the side ends, if you use rabbets, locking drawer joints, dovetails, finger joints, or applied corner blocks, the cut lengths must be adjusted for that joinery.
Material sold as 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch may not measure exactly that thickness. Plywood is particularly likely to be undersized. Measure with calipers and enter the actual thickness because the value is deducted twice. Mill solid-wood stock to final thickness before calculating the front and back.
Choose depth without creating a collision
Finished outside depth equals usable cabinet depth minus the selected rear clearance. It must also be compatible with the nominal slide length. A 21-inch slide generally expects a drawer near that length, but brackets, rear sockets, inset backs, electrical boxes, and face-frame offsets can reduce the space. Measure from the mounting reference plane specified by the hardware maker, not simply from the cabinet's front edge.
Check whether the drawer front is inset or overlay. The decorative front is not included in this box cut list. Its thickness and mounting position can affect how far the box must sit behind the cabinet face and whether the drawer closes before the slide reaches its intended stop.
Applied versus captured bottoms
An applied bottom attaches beneath the box. The calculator reduces it by the chosen edge setback, which can keep the panel edge hidden and leave room for fasteners. Confirm that the slide type permits material below the sides; many undermount systems need dedicated recesses or bottom locations.
A captured bottom enters grooves in all four box parts. Its panel width and depth are based on the inside opening plus twice the groove depth. Cut a test groove in offcut material and measure the actual fit before cutting every panel. The bottom should seat fully without forcing the box out of square. Plywood thickness often differs from the nominal router-bit size, so a matching bit or undersized plywood bit may be necessary.
Account for wood movement and load
Plywood bottoms are dimensionally stable and are commonly captured on all four sides. A solid-wood bottom moves across its grain and should not be trapped without expansion room. Orient grain for the construction method and leave the movement allowance recommended for the species, width, and expected humidity change.
This tool does not rate drawer capacity. Box height, material, joinery, bottom thickness, fasteners, slide rating, and cabinet anchoring all affect load. Deep utility drawers and wide file drawers may need stronger joinery or thicker bottoms than a small kitchen utensil drawer.
Shop sequence and common mistakes
- Install or mock up the slide mounting surfaces and measure the true opening.
- Confirm the exact hardware clearance and nominal slide length.
- Measure actual box material thickness, then generate the cut list.
- Cut one test front or back and dry-fit it between the sides.
- Machine bottom grooves before assembly and confirm panel fit.
- Assemble on a flat surface, compare diagonals, and let the box cure square.
Frequent errors include subtracting per-side clearance only once, using the face-frame opening instead of the slide spacing, forgetting that material thickness is deducted twice, and treating a hardware preset as a substitute for the installation manual. Verify those four points before cutting a full batch.
