Why finished board feet are not enough
A cut list describes the pieces that remain in the project. A lumber order describes larger boards before jointing, planing, trimming, ripping, defect removal, and visual selection. Those two volumes should not be treated as the same number. This calculator keeps them separate so you can see where the purchase recommendation comes from.
Enter each finished part in inches. The finished volume uses the exact thickness, width, length, and quantity you provide. The rough-blank volume replaces finished thickness with the selected rough-stock thickness, then adds your width-cleanup and length-trim allowances to every part. Selection contingency is applied only after those dimensioning allowances.
Choose rough thickness from the required result
Quarter designations describe rough thickness categories: 4/4 is one inch, 5/4 is 1.25 inches, 6/4 is 1.5 inches, and 8/4 is two inches for board-foot tally purposes. They are not promises about the final surfaced thickness. If a part must finish at 3/4 inch, ordinary 4/4 stock is a common starting point, but bowed, twisted, or cupped boards may not clean up that thick.
Work backward from the minimum finished dimension and the condition of the stock you can inspect. A full one-inch finished component generally needs more than 4/4 rough stock. The calculator warns when the selected rough category is thinner than the finished part, but it cannot inspect the flatness or moisture of a real board.
Set cleanup allowances deliberately
Width cleanup covers jointing and ripping. Half an inch per part is a useful example, not a universal rule. A straight, surfaced board may require less; a waney or irregular edge may require much more. Length trim covers checking, rough crosscuts, planer snipe, and final squaring. Long cracks at the end of a board should be excluded before deciding what clear length is available.
These allowances are applied per finished part. They answer, “How large should the rough blank be before final milling?” They do not solve cutting layout. Several blanks may nest efficiently in one wide board, while an awkward combination of lengths may leave unusable offcuts even when the total board-foot volume appears sufficient.
Use contingency for selection risk, not dimensioning
The project presets are planning starting points. Known clear stock can justify a smaller contingency. Typical furniture often needs room for knots, checks, color variation, and grain direction. Grain-matched panels, wide clear components, figured material, bending stock, or sight-unseen purchases can need more. Adjust the percentage to the actual species, grade, supplier, and project.
Keeping this percentage separate from milling volume makes the estimate auditable. If the purchasing target looks high, you can see whether the increase comes from choosing thicker stock, adding rough-blank dimensions, or accepting more selection uncertainty. That is more useful than hiding every loss inside one generic “waste” percentage.
Check geometry before ordering
Board feet measure volume, but projects consume shapes. Identify the longest rail, widest panel component, thickest blank, and every part that must match its neighbor. Confirm that the dealer has boards capable of producing those parts. Ten narrow boards can contain enough volume for a tabletop while still failing a design that requires a small number of broad, uninterrupted faces.
Sketch a cutting plan for critical parts or lay them out on scaled board rectangles. Decide whether short offcuts are useful in the same project. Reusable leftovers are inventory, but they do not help unless their dimensions, species, color, and grain satisfy a real future requirement.
Worked planning example
Suppose four table legs finish at 1.75 × 1.75 × 29 inches and begin as 8/4 stock. With 0.5 inch of width cleanup and two inches of length trim, each rough blank is planned as 2 × 2.25 × 31 inches. The four rough blanks total 3.875 board feet, compared with about 2.47 board feet in the finished legs. A selection contingency is then applied to the rough-blank total, not to the smaller finished volume.
That result still does not guarantee four acceptable legs. Straight grain, matching color, rift orientation, and the cross section of available boards may dictate a different purchase. Use the number to create a defensible starting budget, then verify the real boards before checkout.
